The Pauper Becomes the Prince – AND Moves in with the King: Workspace Save As with Update Parent

Here’s a game-show question that you’ll never hear: What do Pro/INTRALINK 9.0 and Pro/INTRALINK 3.x have in common with Mark Twain’s book The Prince and the Pauper that Pro/INTRALINK 8.0 did not?

Serious students of English will recall that Twain’s fictional story tells how a young pauper takes the place of Prince Edward VI, heir to the throne of King Henry VIII of England, while the prince takes the pauper’s place in his poor home. This change makes for some interesting developments in the royal household. However, if the boys had switched places but the pauper had been unable to enter the palace, Twain would not have had much of a story.

Serious students of Pro/INTRALINK 3.x (to bring us around to the topic at hand) have enjoyed using the “Duplicate Objects” with “Update Parent” capability to make for some interesting product development scenarios. However, Pro/INTRALINK 8.0 lacked this capability – meaning “no story” for those who would have liked to upgrade.

As promised, though, Pro/INTRALINK 9.0 includes Workspace Save As, including the Update Parent capability (and the new Replace function!) for Pro/ENGINEER data. Not only that, but this function can be performed either from the Pro/ENGINEER embedded browser or from a standalone browser – meaning that you can do this from anywhere in the world where you can access the database, even without Pro/ENGINEER. And performing this in the Workspace means that designs can be explored without committing anything to the database. Serious students of product development will certainly appreciate that!

I’ll stop here; there’s no need to write a book about this simple but important topic. But I offer no apologies for the literary theme of this blog. Our CEO has his bachelor’s degree in English literature.
